Tried pocket holes vs traditional dado joints for a kitchen island
I spent last weekend building a 6-foot kitchen island and decided to compare pocket holes and dado joints side by side. The pocket holes were way faster, about 45 minutes saved on assembly, but the dado joints were rock solid with zero racking. Has anyone else found that pocket holes flex too much on heavy use pieces?

Dado joints on an island that size, that racking issue is real. I built a 6 foot workbench with pocket holes once and it wobbled bad after a week of clamping things down. Swapped to dados and it never moved again. Pocket holes are fine for trim work or quick cabinets but they just don't hold up to lateral force on big pieces. Your 45 minute savings probably cost you in the long run if you ever have to reinforce it later.

Yeah man, that's the thing with shortcuts in general isn't it? It's like choosing the quick fix on anything in life, it always seems fine until the real test comes along. I've seen it with cheap tools, quick drywall patches, even with how people cook sometimes. You rush the prep work and then wonder why the sauce is bland or the meat is tough. Pocket holes are basically the same deal - totally awesome for the right job but if you try to use them everywhere you're just asking for trouble down the road. The 45 minutes you saved is cool until you're staring at a wobbly island and realize you gotta take half of it apart to fix what you coulda done right the first time lol.
