TIL a $5 rabbet plane trick for box joints

Last month I was fighting tear-out on some oak drawer boxes, and an older guy at the shop in Portland told me to dull the blade slightly with a fine stone before cutting. I tried it on a scrap piece and the wood fibers snapped clean instead of shredding. It took me 3 tries to get the edge just right, but now my box joints look better than ever. Has anyone else used this trick, or do you prefer a different method for tear-out?
