The shop foreman at Wilson Millworks told me my cabinet backs were wrong, now I have two camps in my head

A guy named Dave over at Wilson Millworks in Spokane looked at my plywood backs and said I was wasting money using 1/2 inch when 1/4 inch with a center brace works fine. I've always doubled up on backs for strength, but he showed me 8 years of his installs with zero callbacks. Question is, who else has had a veteran shop call out their method and did you stick with your old habit or adopt theirs? Feels like there's a real split between the heavy-duty crowd and the weight-saving guys around here.
