Just realized my old boss was right about labeling every drawer part before glue up
I was talking to a guy at the lumber yard in Tulsa about a face frame job that took me three tries to get right. He said something simple, that a pencil mark costs nothing but a wrong rail costs a whole afternoon. I blew him off at the time but then I labeled every stile and rail on my next set of kitchen uppers and finished in 6 hours instead of the 10 I usually burn. Felt kind of dumb for all the rework I ate over the years. Any of you mark your parts before dry fit or do you just eyeball it?
Tbh my buddy runs a two man shop down in Waco and he had the same thing happen. He was building a set of oak cabinet doors and mixed up two rails on a glue up, didn't catch it till the clamps came off, and the whole door was racked. Had to cut it apart and start over, ate like half a day plus the wood. Now he keeps a pencil in his apron and writes on the back of every single piece, even the little ones. Says it feels dumb till it saves your butt one time. Six hours versus ten is a huge jump man, that guy at the lumber yard earned his coffee.
