Heard a guy at a lumber yard say miter joints are for trim, not cabinets

I was picking up some maple ply last Tuesday and this older cabinetmaker was telling the guy at the counter that he never uses mitered corners on face frames because they always open up with humidity swings. That got me thinking about a few jobs I did last summer where I had to go back and fix gaps, maybe I should just switch to butt joints with dowels or biscuits. Has anyone else had miter joints fail on them after a season change, or am I overthinking it?

Cut the miters proud and let the wood move without showing gaps, or use veneered ply faces with butt joints.
