Found out a standard base cabinet wastes 6 inches behind the drawers, and I can't stop thinking about it
I was reading a spec sheet from a plywood supplier in Ohio last Tuesday and it said a standard 24 inch deep base cabinet only uses about 18 inches of usable depth once you account for the drawer box and the void behind the runners. That means 6 inches of space on every single base cabinet just sits there empty. In a 10 foot run of lowers, you're looking at roughly 600 cubic inches of wasted room, which is wild when you think about how tight kitchens are getting. I've been building frameless boxes for 8 years and never once measured that gap. A cabinet buddy of mine in Grand Rapids says he's been sliding full extension drawers back an extra 4 inches on custom jobs for a while now. Has anyone here actually tried deeper drawer boxes on a standard cabinet, or does it mess with the glide rating too much?
