Took me 3 tries to get the right stitch for patching my Carhartt jacket but the second hand darning loom from the thrift store finally did the trick
The regular needle kept slipping through the worn fabric after the first two patches failed in the wash, so I spent $6 on that old wooden Speedweve loom and now the elbow has held up for 8 months of daily wear - has anyone else tried those vintage darning tools or am I just lucky?

Have you ever had a friend who swears by those old metal darning eggs? My buddy Tom found one at a garage sale for a dollar, and he's been using it to patch his work jeans for years now - says nothing else works on the thick denim. It's funny how the cheap old stuff sometimes outlasts the new gadgets, right?

My grandpa had a wooden one from the 1940s that he'd use on his Carhartt jackets. Put a little beeswax on the thread before you start, it'll glide through the denim way smoother and the patch won't fray. Funny how a fifty-cent fix beats a thirty-dollar gadget every time.
