That week my backpack strap snapped mid-hike in the Smokies and I had to duct tape it for 4 miles.
It was a $35 Jansport I'd had for 3 years, but the stitching just gave out carrying a heavy water bottle, and now I'm wondering if anyone else has had a supposedly 'tough' bag fail at a random seam like that.

Duct tape for 4 miles" that's a real survivor move. But honestly it's kind of funny how we trust some random brand name like it's unbreakable and then the simplest thing takes it down. I've noticed this same pattern with lots of stuff lately, not just bags. Like how a cheap pair of shoes will last forever but a mid-range pair falls apart in a few months because they cut corners on the stitching nobody sees. Maybe we're all just paying for the look of toughness and not the real thing.

Man I had this old backpack I bought at a gas station for like 15 bucks and it lasted me through three years of college and a trip across Europe. Then I finally upgraded to a name brand one that was supposed to be bombproof and the zipper gave out after two months. Ended up going back to the cheap one with a safety pin holding the strap together and it outlasted the new one by a mile. Makes you wonder if companies just count on us not demanding better from the stuff we buy.
