That old machinist at the scrapyard who saved me $60 on a vise

Back in 2018, this guy in Buffalo spotted me about to grab a rusty Wilton and just said 'check the swivel base first, kid' - saved me a headache and a broken bolt. He walked off before I could thank him, but I still think about that 30 second interaction every time I use my vise.

Old guys like that are dying out. They knew how to fix stuff before YouTube existed. That 30 second tip probably saved you more than $60 when you factor in the broken bolt headache.

My dad was exactly that kind of guy. He fixed our dryer with a paperclip once and it ran for another five years. I swear he could look at a broken motor and just know what was wrong with it. That kind of hands-on knowledge is something you just can't get from a video tutorial, no matter how good it is.
