Spent 6 months trying to keep my leather work gloves from tearing at the thumb, finally fixed it with a $4 tube of Shoe Goo
I was going through a pair of $30 gloves every 8 weeks because the thumb seam would blow out from gripping tools, and I tried stitching them, duct tape, even buying "heavy duty" ones that cost $45. A guy at the hardware store in Boise told me to just coat the seam with Shoe Goo before I ever wear them, and that pair has now lasted 14 months with zero tears. Has anyone else found a cheap fix that made a disposable item last way longer than expected?
Shoe Goo before I ever wear them" is the real tip here, not the repair itself. I did the same thing with my work boots, slapped a bead of that stuff along the crease where the toe bends, and it stopped the cracking that always killed them at about the 5 month mark. Same deal with the cheap foam flip flops I use for yard work, glued the strap anchor back on and got two more summers out of them. That tube is like $4 and it outlasts the stuff it's holding together. Best money I ever spent at a hardware store.
