Rant: the $12 folding knife I carried for 3 years snapped on a zip tie in my garage
I was in my garage in Boise last Saturday cutting a thick zip tie off a new shop vac hose when the blade just folded over with a soft pop. The lock bar had worn down to nothing after years of daily use, and I never once checked it. I grabbed my old fixed blade off the pegboard, finished the cut in two seconds, and ordered a replacement that same night. Now I check blade play every couple weeks and I'm done trusting any sub $20 folder for real work. What do you all carry for dirty jobs where a lock failure could actually bite you?
How hard were you actually using that thing day to day? Like were you prying with it, twisting it, or just cutting? Because a lock wearing down to nothing in 3 years sounds like more than normal cutting use. If you were doing any kind of prying or torquing on it, that's not really the knife's fault so much as using a folder for something it was never built to do. I'm not defending a $12 knife, but I do wonder if the lock failure was the tool or the way it got treated. Either way checking blade play every couple weeks is smart and more people should do it. What did you end up replacing it with, another folder or did you go fixed blade full time?
