My $180 cast iron pan warped after 8 months, and I'm done pretending it's indestructible
Came home last week to find my cast iron pan sitting on the counter with a visible curve in the bottom. Turns out my roommate had been cranking the burner to high to "season it fast" every time he used it, and after maybe 15 rounds of that, the thing just gave up. I put it on the glass cooktop to test it and the whole pan spun like a top when I nudged the handle. Everyone in this community acts like cast iron survives nuclear war, but heat cycles and careless handling will kill it just as fast as any nonstick junk. What's your actual failure story with a piece of iron you thought would outlive you?
the whole pan spun like a top when I nudged the handle" made me laugh because I did the exact same test on mine and my husband just stared at me like I'd lost my mind. Mine warped when I dumped it in cold water while it was still screaming hot, which apparently is a crime against cookware. So much for the heirloom I promised my kids.
