Hot take: people keep buying new air filters when their old one just needs a $4 rinse
I run a small shop in Ohio and I see this all the time. Folks come in with a furnace filter that is only 3 months old, caked in dust, and they shell out $25 for a new one without a second thought. I have been washing my own reusable filters in the sink with dish soap for six years and they still catch everything. A buddy of mine tossed his every 30 days for a decade, then switched to rinse and reuse and his yearly filter bill dropped from $300 to basically nothing. What filters are you all running that actually hold up to being washed over and over?
Washing them sounds good until you look at what actually happens. Rinsing a filter can push dust deeper into the pleats and mess up the fibers, so it stops catching the fine stuff that wrecks your blower motor. Saving a few bucks on filters is nothing compared to a $600 repair bill.
