Fed $40 into a cheap toaster oven that caught fire in month 2
Picked up a no-name toaster oven at a discount store for $40 thinking it was a steal for my tiny apartment kitchen. One morning it started smoking bad while toasting a bagel and I had to unplug it fast before the plastic handle melted off. Has anyone else had a small appliance turn into a fire hazard like that?

I actually just read a report from Consumer Reports that tested a bunch of budget toaster ovens and found that several of them had serious electrical issues, like exposed wiring and overheating components. A friend of mine had a similar scare with a no-name air fryer that started sparking after a few uses, so I think cheap appliances can be a real gamble with safety. From what I've seen online, a lot of these off-brand ovens skip important safety features to keep the price low, which is scary. My advice is to always check for a UL or ETL safety certification on the box, even if it costs a bit more upfront. Your experience is a good warning for anyone trying to save money on kitchen gear, in my opinion.

Gotta push back a little here. I've had cheap toaster ovens last years without any issues, and I think a lot of this fear comes from one bad experience blowing up online. Your handle melting doesn't necessarily mean the whole thing is a fire hazard waiting to happen - sometimes it's just a bad batch or you left it on too long. People act like every $40 appliance is gonna burn your house down, but the reality is millions of these things are sold and work fine. UL certification is nice to have, sure, but it's not a magic shield against user error or just plain bad luck with a lemon. I'd say keep it in perspective - don't throw away your whole budget just because one cheap oven had a problem.
