Blew $80 on a "heavy-duty" backpack that ripped in 3 weeks

I saw this pack at an outdoor store in Flagstaff and the sales guy swore it was built for years of abuse... first trip hauling my usual load of tools and a change of clothes and the bottom seam split right open. The fabric was thin and the stitching just gave out under maybe 35 pounds. Guess I should have looked closer at the materials before handing over the cash. Anyone else run into fake "tough" gear that falls apart fast?

Flagstaff outdoor store, huh. I bought a $40 pack from a discount bin there six years ago that's still going strong. Maybe the problem isn't the brand or the price, but how you're packing it. 35 pounds in a day pack is a lot, and if you're shoving tools in without any padding or packing the weight wrong, you're asking for a seam failure no matter what you paid. I've seen guys overload cheap frames and blame the manufacturer, when it's really about using the right bag for the load.
