Trying to explain marbling at a cookout led to blank stares

I was at a backyard barbecue last weekend, and the host handed me a knife to slice the brisket. Without thinking, I started breaking it down like I do at the shop, pointing out the grain and fat cap. Everyone just stared at me, totally confused. The host's kid asked if I was performing surgery. Now I stick to just cutting and keeping my mouth shut.

Ask them what part of the fat cap explanation lost them. Was it the term "fat cap" itself, or just the whole detailed breakdown?

I used to break down every cut of meat at parties just like you did. @the_jesse has a point about asking what confused them, but most folks just want to eat. These days I save the shop talk for the kitchen and let the food speak for itself.

Feel like I turn into a total meat professor the second someone hands me a carving knife... can't help it. Last time I started in on connective tissue and collagen breakdown, my buddy's wife just slowly backed away with her plate. Now I just smile, nod, and slice. The detailed commentary stays in my head where it belongs. Some lessons you only need to learn once.
