Overheard a guy at the salvage yard say he never touches a breaker without a meter, now I kind of get it

Was pulling a starter off a 2008 Malibu last Saturday and this older dude next to me was swapping a fuse box. He told me he blew out two ECUs over the years just guessing which circuit was dead, like $400 each. So he bought a $25 multimeter at Harbor Freight and now tests everything twice. I always just eyeballed wires and prayed, which is exactly how my dryer started spinning backwards after my 'fix'. Got my own meter yesterday, gonna trace a short in my lawn mower before I buy another coil. Has anyone else had a cheap tool save them from a dumb mistake that cost way more?

$400 a pop, but you still rolled the dice twice? Sounds like an expensive guess, not a meter problem.
