Just realized I was butchering my brake bleeds for 6 years

I always pumped the pedal like crazy after opening the bleeder valve until a neighbor caught me and said you're just sucking air back in... that backflow thing is real, right? Anybody else have a basic car fix they did backwards for way too long?

Happens all the time with basic household stuff too, I spent years putting the drain plug back in my sink wrong because I never read the manual.

Pretty much everything we use daily came with a manual, but nobody reads them until something breaks. It's like we all assume we can figure stuff out by instinct, @davidh88, when really the instructions exist because someone else already made all the mistakes for us. There's a weird pride in being a "just figure it out" person that ends up costing us time and frustration more often than not.
