Gear oil vs. grease for my busted hitch coupler, grease was the wrong call

Last month I packed the ball hitch with thick grease like the tube said, and it seized up after 40 miles of towing. Switched to a cheap needle injector with gear oil and it moves smooth now, anyone else had a coupler lock from using grease?

Read a bulletin from one of the hitch makers that said grease can actually trap water and grit, which is exactly what locks things up. Gear oil's thinner and flushes better, so you're not crazy for switching.
