DIY brake bleed gone sideways, or was it the ABS module all along?

Tried to flush the brake fluid on my 2012 Civic last Saturday. Used the old two-person pedal pump method, got air in the line, then the pedal went soft and the ABS light came on. I almost pulled the module apart before a buddy said to check the bleed order first. Turns out I was doing rear driver side before rear passenger, which matters on this car. Now I'm wondering, how many of you had a simple mistake that looked like a major failure, and did you fix it with the easy step or replace parts you didn't need?

Most brake bleeders skip the proportioning valve reset on these cars, which can trap pressure and mimic a bad ABS unit. Flipping the pedal to the floor with the bleeder open for a full second usually clears it before you touch any module.
