Paid a guy $400 to "speed up" our office wifi and all he did was move the router 2 feet
So about 3 months ago our office internet kept dropping during video calls and my boss finally gave me the okay to hire someone. Found this local IT guy in Sacramento with good reviews who quoted $400 to come out and "optimize our business network." He shows up, looks at our router sitting on the floor next to a metal filing cabinet, and just picks it up and sets it on top of a shelf. Calls it "interference reduction." Then he runs one speed test, writes something in a notebook, and leaves. Took him 20 minutes total. Our wifi was the exact same speed after. The drops kept happening. The real issue turned out to be our provider's service plan, which we upgraded for $30 more a month and everything got fixed. So I basically handed a stranger $400 for lifting a router onto a shelf where I could have put it myself for free. Just ask your provider to check your plan before you pay someone to do magic tricks on your equipment.
That "interference reduction" trick is real, but metal near a router usually causes it, and a shelf doesn't always fix it. The thing nobody checks is whether the drops happen on wifi only or also on a wired connection, that alone tells you if it's even your equipment or just the line coming in.
