Warning: Summer Europe trips were my thing, but Vienna in winter made me think again.

I always picked summer for Europe trips because I thought the weather was key. Last year, I went to Vienna in November on a whim. The flights cost half as much, and hotels were way cheaper. I packed a warm coat and found the Christmas markets open. The streets weren't packed, so I saw more without crowds. I even got into museums without waiting in line. Now I look for off-peak times first. It made my cash go further and the trip felt more special.

I always laugh when people act like Europe shuts down after August. My hotel in Vienna last January was cheaper than a weekend at a local beach resort, and I had the entire Kunsthistorisches Museum practically to myself.

Having a museum to yourself sounds perfect.
