The $68 hostal 'upgrade' in Barcelona was a total ripoff

I booked a cheap shared dorm in Barcelona for 3 nights, then the front desk pushed this 'must-have' private room upgrade with a rooftop view. I paid the extra $68 and got a closet with a window facing a brick wall, plus the rooftop was closed for maintenance. I mean, the bunk bed had a weird smell too, but at least I could open a window in the dorm. Anyone else get talked into a hostel upsell that was worse than the original room?
