The $3 metro card trick I swore by in Rome backfired hard last month
I used to always buy a 100 minute metro ticket in Rome and ride it across town to grab a second bus after the time ran out. Last month I tried it at Termini and the gate literally locked between my legs, scary stuff. A transit cop waved me over and I thought I was getting a fine, but he just laughed and showed me the new validation rules on his tablet. Now I only buy single tickets or day passes, learned my lesson about relying on old hacks from 2019. Has anyone else had an old trick stop working in a city that updated its system?

see, I actually think that gate thing is on you for not checking the new rules when you got there. the systems change every few years, that's just how it goes. I rode the metro in Rome last spring and noticed the new validation screens right away, took me two seconds to read the sign. honestly, getting a laugh from the cop instead of a fine is basically winning the lottery there. plus, the 100 minute ticket was never that great anyway, it always left you sweating over the time limit and sprinting for buses. day passes are more expensive but at least you're not doing math every time you hop on. maybe the old tricks should just stay in the past.
