That $40 hostal stay taught me a lesson about location

I booked a place in Barcelona for 40 bucks a night thinking I scored a deal. Turned out it was 45 minutes by metro from the main sites. I spent more on transit passes and time than I saved. Should have just paid a bit more to be closer. Anyone else get burned by a cheap stay that was way too far out?

Always check the map first, learned that one the hard way too.

I used to think I could just wing it and figure things out as I went along, @caseyl18. But after getting completely turned around on a trip last summer, I changed my mind real quick. Spent two hours driving in circles because I figured I knew better than the map. Now I pull up the map before I even start the car, especially in unfamiliar places. It saves so much time and frustration, it is worth the extra minute.
