Random guy at a bus station in Denver told me to stop booking hotels and start using hostel private rooms

I was stuck waiting for a delayed Greyhound and this older traveler noticed me scrolling through Expedia. He said he pays like $25-40 a night for private rooms at hostels in Europe and Asia and they come with free breakfast and wifi. Anybody else converted to hostel privates for cheap solo trips or is that too sketchy for your comfort level?

Haven't stayed at a hostel since my 20s and my wallet is scared to go back.

Prices have gone up so much that hostels aren't even that cheap anymore. I looked into one last year for a weekend trip and it was almost what a motel costs. Hard to justify the shared bathroom when the savings ain't what they used to be.
