Pro tip: I stopped booking hotels and started using 24 hour gyms for showers

Was traveling through Portland last spring and my hostel fell through last minute. Got desperate and bought a $20 day pass at a big chain gym just to shower. Realized I could sleep in my rental car in their parking lot, use their bathroom all night, and grab a workout before hitting the road. Saved maybe $150 on a single night compared to a motel. Anyone else try this move or found other places open 24 hours that work?

Yeah the part about sleeping in the rental car in their parking lot is where it gets real. I did this a few times when I was driving cross country and needed to save cash. Planet Fitness parking lots are perfect for it because they're well lit and nobody bothers you. I'd shower, use the bathroom, then crash in my backseat for a few hours before hitting the road again. Honestly it felt sketchy the first time but after that it was just normal. Saved me probably $200 over a three night stretch compared to cheap motels. Just make sure you park near the back where the cameras can see you but nobody's walking right past your window.
