Pro tip: A stranger in Bangkok saved me $300 on a flight with one simple question

I was at a hostel in Bangkok last year, stressing over a flight to Hanoi. A guy from Australia saw me looking at prices and just asked, 'Have you checked for flights from the other airport?' I was only looking at the main one. He showed me a budget airline from Don Mueang that was way cheaper. I booked it right there and saved a ton. Has anyone else found a big saving just by checking a different airport in the same city?

Ever think about checking airports in nearby cities? I did that in Europe once, trying to get to Milan. Flights into Malpensa were crazy expensive, but flying into Bergamo, which is basically a budget airline hub not too far away, was way cheaper. The train from there into Milan was easy and saved me a couple hundred bucks. Now I always zoom out on the map when I'm searching.

Yeah that zoom out trick is solid, @masontorres. I read a whole travel blog about this for the US. Like everyone tries to fly straight into San Francisco, but sometimes landing in Oakland or even San Jose is way cheaper, and you can just take BART or a bus in. Same with New York, skipping JFK for Newark can save a ton if you don't mind the train ride. It's a little extra planning but totally worth it for the cash you keep.
