My friend in Bangkok said hostels are dead and you should only book private rooms now, but my $12 dorm bed in Prague last month was fine. What's your take?

That really depends on the trip and your budget. My last vacation to Lisbon was on a tight schedule, so a cheap dorm let me spend more on tours and food. Sometimes you just need a safe place to sleep and shower. Other times, especially after a long flight, the privacy is worth the extra cost.

Totally agree about the privacy after a long flight, I once paid double for a private room just to crash properly.
