Just found out hostels in Japan often charge per person not per room and my math was way off
I was planning a trip to Tokyo for next spring and budgeting based on hostel prices I saw online. Turns out I was looking at the price per person in a dorm room and thinking that was the whole room cost. Found out when I tried to book a private room for me and my friend and the total for 4 nights was almost double what I expected. The booking site had it listed as 4000 yen but that was per person per bed. Did anyone else make this mistake when traveling abroad? How do you tell before you book?

Oh man, I had the exact same thing happen to me but with a hostel in Barcelona a few years back. I got all excited because I found a place for 15 euros a night and told my husband we could afford a whole extra week. Then I went to book a private room for us and our kid and it was 45 euros per person per night. My math was so off I almost cried. I always check now if it says per person or per room, usually in the fine print near the total. Some sites let you filter by private rooms and that helps too.

Private rooms in hostels are a total scam sometimes with the per person pricing.
