Just found out hostel lockers in Amsterdam charge by the hour, not the night, and I'm still mad about it
So I'm planning a 5 night trip to Amsterdam for next spring and I'm deep in the hostel booking sites trying to keep the whole thing under $600 including flights. I pull up this one place near Vondelpark, looks solid, $28 a night for a dorm bed, and then I scroll to the fine print. The lockers are 2 euros per hour. Per hour. Not per night, not a flat fee, an hourly rate like it's a parking meter. I did the math and if I lock my bag up for 8 hours while I'm out walking around, that's 16 euros a day, which is more than half the cost of the actual bed. I've stayed in hostels in Lisbon and Budapest and never seen anything like this. I even emailed the place to ask if I was reading it wrong and they said it's an automated system and that's just how it works. So now I'm looking at either paying more for a private room with a real door or just carrying everything with me all day. Has anyone run into lockers with weird fees like this, and is there a trick to getting around it?
Two euros an HOUR? That is straight up wild, like they expect your backpack to be a rental car or something. Charging more for the locker than the bed makes zero sense, and an "automated system" is just a fancy way of saying nobody there can override it for you. Honestly for five nights I'd just hunt for another hostel, since this smells like a place that will nickel and dime you on everything.
