I swore by hostels for a decade until a 45-minute bus ride changed my mind
I always thought paying for a private room was just throwing money away, especially in Europe. Last trip to Prague I booked a hostel dorm for $18 a night but the noise kept me up till 3am every night. After three days of walking around half asleep I finally caved and took a bus 45 minutes outside the city to a guesthouse that cost $35 a night. The quiet let me actually enjoy my days and I spent less on coffee to stay awake. Has anyone else found that saving on accommodation actually cost more in the long run?

So basically you paid $17 for a good night's sleep, sounds like a bargain to me.

Yeah I read somewhere that bad sleep can mess up your whole trip budget.

My buddy Tom booked a cheap hotel in Orlando last year and woke up with a busted AC and a mattress that felt like a parking lot. He spent three days dragging around Disney World like a zombie and ended up buying $60 worth of energy drinks just to keep his eyes open. Between the caffeine and the missed naps, he said it wrecked his whole itinerary and he barely saw half the stuff he paid for. A good mattress is cheap insurance when you're trying to enjoy a vacation.
