I finally tried that 'grocery store lunch' trick in Lisbon
I was waiting for a bus and heard a couple talking about how they saved over 15 euros a day by getting lunch from a local market instead of a cafe. I tried it the next day at the Mercado da Ribeira, got a huge sandwich, a drink, and a pastry for under 5 euros total. It was way better than the 12 euro tourist menu I had the day before. What's your best grocery store or market find in a new city?

That trick can backfire if you waste time finding the market and miss out on the local cafe experience.
