I finally tried couchsurfing vs budget hostels and the difference was huge

Last summer I did a week in Portland staying at a $35 a night hostel and it was fine but kinda lonely. Then I tried couchsurfing with a local who showed me all the free spots to eat and hike. Saved like $200 on accommodation and got way better tips than any guidebook. Has anyone else found that meeting locals beats saving a few bucks at a hostel?

Three years ago I did the exact same thing in Austin and it completely changed how I travel. The guy I stayed with took me to this hidden taco spot that cost like 3 bucks and it was the best meal I had the whole trip. I honestly think you miss out on the REAL city when you just stick to tourist hostels.

Wait, three bucks for that kind of meal?
