Hostel dorm vs private room during a 3 week trip to Rome

I went back and forth between saving $25 a night in a 6 bed dorm or spending more for a private room. Ended up picking the dorm because I wanted to meet people, but after 3 nights of noisy roommates I was exhausted. Anyone else regret the dorm choice for long trips?

Have you tried using earplugs and an eye mask? In my experience, after about day two, you learn to sleep through the snoring and the people coming in late. I actually prefer dorms for longer trips because you get more local tips from other travelers. The private rooms can feel isolating after a while, especially when you're tired from sightseeing and just want to chat with someone. But your mileage may vary, some people just need that quiet space to recharge.
