Am I the only one who switched from booking flights early to waiting until 3 weeks out?
I used to book my flights the second I knew I was going somewhere, like 4 or 5 months ahead, because everyone swears that is the cheapest way. Last year I flew to Denver for a wedding and paid $412 booking way early, then my buddy booked the exact same route 18 days before the trip and got it for $228. I was pretty annoyed, so I tried it myself on a trip to Austin in March and waited until about 3 weeks out, and it came in at $261 round trip. The thing is, it does not always work, my sister waited too long for a flight to Seattle and got stuck paying $390. So now I watch the price on Google Flights for a bit and only pull the trigger when it drops, instead of just locking it in right away. Has anyone else had luck with the 3 week window, or does it blow up in your face more often than it works?
How long are you usually watching the price before you decide to book? I tried that game once and kept waiting for a drop that never came, so I ended up worse off than if I had just grabbed it early. Curious if you set a certain price in your head or just go by gut feeling.
