A hostel owner in Lisbon called my packing list stupid and it saved me $60
Last spring I was at a hostel in Lisbon and the owner saw me pull out my own towel, shampoo, and a travel adapter I'd paid $22 for at the airport. He said most hostels there loan towels for free and every plug in Portugal is the same two round pins, so I was just carrying weight and wasting cash. I checked the front desk and he was right, they handed me a towel for nothing. I also stopped buying adapters at airports after that and picked one up at a hardware store for $4. Now I look up the outlet type and hostel amenities before I leave. Does anyone else check what the hostel actually provides before packing?
