A hostel guy in Lisbon said my packing cubes were 'a scam for tourists' and it stung because he was kind of right
I was stuffing 6 cubes into a 40L bag for a $9 Ryanair flight and he pointed out I could just roll my shirts tight and save the $25 I spent on them. Now I roll everything and use one cube for socks and cords, and my bag weighs the same. Anyone else ditch the cubes after someone called them out?
The real trick nobody talks about is that cubes are most useful when you're moving between hostels every 2 days. If you're staying a week somewhere, sure, rolling loose works fine. But when I was doing 8 cities in 3 weeks, repacking every morning from scratch turned into a nightmare, and cubes let me just grab the whole bag out and shove it in without digging around. So the guy wasn't totally wrong, but he was only right for his style of travel, not everyone's.
