Update: My cheap soup plan backfired in a weird way

I tried to use up old vegetables by boiling them into a broth. Got a bunch of carrots and celery that were on sale. Things went south when I tossed in what I thought was parsley from my garden. Turns out it was a bunch of mint leaves I forgot about. The whole pot tasted like toothpaste, and I had to throw it out. Maybe it's just me, but idk, I should check my herbs better next time. At least the veggies were only a couple dollars, so not a huge loss.

My local gardening group has a pinned post just for herb mix-ups. They get at least three new photos a week of mystery plants people almost cooked with. It's a whole category of mistake that happens because we see green leaves and assume we know what they are. I've started labeling my pots with paint markers after a similar cilantro vs. parsley disaster.

Once grabbed what I thought was oregano from my mom's garden for chili. Turns out it was lemon balm, and the whole pot had this weird citrus vibe. We still ate it, but everyone kept asking if I put fruit in the meat. Now I double check every leaf before it goes in the pot.

That lemon balm mix-up is a classic garden mistake, @wren978. Been there with mint thinking it was basil. The best trick is to crush a leaf between your fingers and smell it before picking a bunch. It saves you from that weird citrus twist in a savory dish. Always tastes way off even if you try to power through it.
