Took me 4 years to realize I was overspending on grocery store spices

Every time I'd see a recipe call for a spice I didn't have, I'd grab that little jar for $4 or $5 at the chain store. Last month I finally walked into the Mexican market on 5th Street and saw the same sized bag of cumin for 89 cents. I ran the numbers on my last year of spice purchases and it was around $120 easy. All that time I thought I was being frugal by cooking from scratch, but I was throwing money away on packaging and markup. The quality is honestly better too. Anyone else sleep on ethnic grocery stores for staples like this?
