The $45 grocery haul that turned into $12 of actual food

I tried that 'buy in bulk and meal prep everything' thing last month, grabbed a huge bag of chicken thighs, a giant sack of rice, and a bunch of veggies from a warehouse store. Total was $45 and I was feeling pretty smart about it. Problem is, I didn't check the chicken's sell-by date close enough, it went bad by day two and I had to toss half of it. The rice was fine but I got so bored of plain rice and chicken that I ended up ordering takeout twice that week, which killed any savings. So my question is, do you all actually stick to those big batch plans, or do you find the waste and boredom makes it a wash? Has anyone else lost money this way trying to be 'smart' about bulk buying?
