Rant: The week I tried to feed my family of 4 on $50
Last Tuesday I challenged myself to spend only $50 for the whole week at the grocery store in Portland... ended up making a giant pot of lentil soup that lasted 3 dinners. The trick was buying dry beans for $1.29 a pound at WinCo instead of canned... but my kids complained by day four. Has anyone else managed to stretch a tiny grocery budget without everyone rebelling?

I’ll be honest, I used to roll my eyes at the whole "beans and rice" thing. But after trying this myself last month, I get it now. The lentil soup hack is real, though my kids gave me the same side-eye by day three.

I mean, is it really that serious? I get that lentils are cheap and all, but by day three my whole family would be ready to mutiny. Maybe it's just me, but I feel like there's a middle ground between survival beans and going broke on takeout. @bettyrodriguez your kids are probably just mad you didn't switch it up with some black beans or something halfway through. I'm not saying the hack is bad, but calling it a "real" thing feels like overselling it a bit. At the end of the day, it's still just soup.
