PSA: I compared making my own taco seasoning to buying the packets and saved a ton
Honestly, I used to grab those 99 cent packets every week for taco night. Last month I finally mixed my own using chili powder, cumin, and stuff I already had in the cupboard. Tbh, it cost me about 15 cents per batch and tastes way better, plus I can control the salt. Has anyone else tried this and found a good spice mix ratio they like?

Absolutely, making your own is a total game changer. I did the same thing last year and never looked back. My go-to mix is two parts chili powder to one part cumin, with a good pinch of garlic powder and onion powder. It lets me skip the weird anti-caking stuff they put in the packets. The flavor is just fresher and more real, you know?

I get what @angela40 is saying, but honestly, is it that big of a deal? The packet stuff works fine for a quick Tuesday night dinner. Measuring out all those separate spices every time sounds like a lot of work for something that's basically just going on some ground beef. The flavor difference can't be that huge.

Yeah, you just gotta find a ratio that works and make a bigger batch. I mix up a jar once a month and it takes maybe ten minutes. The key for me was cutting way back on the salt. Most packets are loaded with it. I do 3 tablespoons chili powder, 2 tablespoons cumin, 1 tablespoon oregano, 1 tablespoon garlic powder, 1 tablespoon onion powder, and a teaspoon of cayenne if I want heat. Throw it in a shaker jar and it's ready to go.
