My roommate tried to make 'fancy' ramen with a $15 jar of truffle salt
I was in the kitchen last Tuesday when he pulled out this tiny jar he got from some fancy food store. He sprinkled a ton of it into a 25 cent pack of instant noodles and said it would 'elevate the dish.' It tasted like feet and pennies, honestly. The whole thing cost more than just making a decent soup from scratch. Has anyone else seen a budget meal idea that totally missed the point?

Ugh, that's the perfect way to ruin both the salt and the noodles. Why not just fry an egg and throw in some green onions? You get way more flavor for like fifty cents.

jamiegreen is totally right about just frying an egg and adding green onions, that's exactly what I started doing when my budget was tight. I tried a similar thing once with some fancy chili oil on top of cheap instant ramen and it just tasted like grease and regret. Now I just keep it simple with a soft boiled egg, some frozen veggies, and a splash of soy sauce. Costs like a buck extra and actually makes the noodles taste good without trying to be something they're not. Sometimes the cheap stuff is good because it's cheap, no need to dress it up like a prom date.

Oh man, that's the worst. It's like putting a gold hubcap on a broken-down car. Some things just don't need to be "elevated," you know?
