My neighbor swore dried beans were a ripoff so I did the math on her porch
My neighbor Dana and I got into it last Tuesday on her porch about whether dried beans really save money over canned. She said she did the math once and a bag of dried beans at Food Lion for $2.19 plus the gas to cook them longer came out about even with two cans at $1.49 each, and she never went back. I said that only works if you count your time as billable and you never eat the beans as a main dish, and she said most people quit because the texture is never right so they toss the pot, which makes it the most expensive meal of the week. Then her husband walked out with a bowl of her chili and said it was made with two cans, which honestly did not help my side. So I want to know how people here actually factor in the time and the flavor tradeoff. Does anyone here really come out ahead with dried, or is Dana right that the savings are mostly a story we tell ourselves?
