My aunt in Cleveland called my $9 pot of beans 'poor food' and I almost hung up on her
So my aunt came over for dinner three weeks ago and I made a big pot of pinto beans with onions, a ham hock, and cornbread, and it cost me around $9 total for six servings. She took two bites and said 'this is poor food, why are you feeding your kids like this' right in front of them. I told her I grew up on this and she grew up eating out of the same pot at her own mom's table back in the 70s. She said things are different now and people eat better if they work harder, which is wild because she is on a fixed income and complains about grocery prices every time we talk. I did the math after she left, that dinner was $1.50 a plate and it fed all of us, meanwhile she drops $30 at the drive thru twice a week. Has anyone else had family talk down to you for cooking beans and rice like it's a shameful thing?
Why does everyone act like beans are something to be embarrassed about when half the world eats them every single day? Your aunt sat at her own mom's table eating the same pot and now she wants to act like it is beneath her, which makes zero sense. Nine bucks for six servings of real food with a ham hock in it is not poor food, that is smart cooking and it probably tastes better than that drive thru stuff she is buying twice a week. I would take a bowl of pinto beans and cornbread over a $30 bag of lukewarm burgers any day of the week. Next time she comes over just tell her the drive thru is down the street and hand her a plate anyway.
