I was sure canned sardines would be gross but my coworker dared me to try them on toast with hot sauce and now I buy them by the case for under $2 a tin.
She swore it was a cheap protein hack and after three lunches I'm actually craving that salty fishy combo, has anyone else found a weird canned item that became a staple?

Peel back that tin and suddenly you're a gourmet chef with a $2 pantry. Hot sauce is doing a lot of heavy lifting here, but honestly, I respect the grind.

and it's honestly a whole mindset thing with folks these days. we've got people spending thirty bucks on a single jar of small batch hot sauce while the shelf stable canned stuff gets called trash. nobody wants to admit that the fifty cent can of beans plus some decent seasoning is what actually feeds most of us most nights. the marketing tells you that good food has to be a project, that you need fancy ingredients and some kind of technique, so people end up feeling bad about eating what's cheap and easy. but the real move is knowing that the pantry basics are the backbone and the fancy stuff is just the garnish. i see it everywhere, people flexing their cooking skills so hard but the actual meals they eat on a tuesday are probably closer to your tin can than they'd ever say out loud.
