Waited 7 days for a $3 thermal pad to ship and my old laptop runs 20 degrees cooler, so is the cheap fix always the move?
So my 2019 laptop was hitting 95C under load and sounding like a jet engine, so I opened it up and the factory paste was dry and cracked like old mud. I ordered a $3 thermal pad from a shop in Ohio instead of paying $40 for the fancy paste everyone swears by, and I had to wait 7 days for it to show up, which felt dumb at the time. After I swapped it in, temps dropped to the mid 70s and the fan barely spins up now, and this was over maybe 3 days of testing with the same games. Here is the debate part. One side says cheap parts are fine because heat is heat and pads are just pads, and the big name stuff is mostly marketing. The other side says you get what you pay for, and a $3 pad might dry out or pump out in 6 months and you are back to square one. I have been burned before by cheap stuff failing, but this one is holding so far and I am honestly not sure which camp is right. Has anyone run a cheap pad for a full year and had it stay solid, or did it fail on you and force a redo?

Man, seven days for a $3 pad is wild, you basically paid in suspense instead of money. Here is the thing though, those cheap pads are usually just silicone with filler, and the real risk is not temp right away, it is pump out and hardening over time. A lot of the fancy stuff is marketing fluff, sure, but some of it does hold up better after a year of heat cycles. Run it, watch your temps once a month, and if it creeps back up you will know for sure.
