Tried the foil trick on my PS4's overheating problem and it actually dropped the fan noise
My launch PS4 was sounding like a jet engine every time I loaded up a game, so I finally cracked it open last weekend after putting it off for about 4 months. I watched a few teardowns and decided to skip the thermal paste swap and just try cleaning out the heatsink with compressed air and a soft brush first, since I wasn't sure I had the right paste anyway. Here's the weird part: I also tried taping a small strip of aluminum foil over the vent gap on the bottom, something a guy at my local game shop in Rochester mentioned offhand. I figured it would do nothing, but the fan spun way quieter during a 2 hour session of Horizon, like noticeably less loud. I learned that airflow paths matter more than I thought, and a big part of my issue was hot air getting trapped instead of moving out. My temps went from hitting 80C down to around 71C on the same game. I'm still not sure the foil is a real fix or just a placebo effect, has anyone else tried blocking vents like this and seen a real drop?
Ah yes, the ancient art of taping foil to a console, truly a big brain fix from the Rochester game shop oracle. Next you'll tell me a rubber band and some hope will fix my joycon drift. But honestly if the numbers are real then who cares what it looks like, 80 to 71 is no joke. Just don't come back here in a month posting about a melted strip of foil fused to your motherboard.
