The hair dryer trick to fix my Xbox 360 got me 3 weeks of play time and a melted plastic smell
So my old Xbox 360 Elite from like 2009 started giving me the red ring of death back in November, and I did the towel trick where you wrap it in towels and let it overheat to reflow the solder. It actually worked, which blew my mind. I played through two whole games for about 3 weeks straight. Then last Tuesday I noticed a weird burning plastic smell coming from the vents and the fans were screaming way louder than normal. I opened it up and the thermal paste was basically dust and the heat sink was caked with this hard brown gunk. Turns out the towel trick just cooks everything inside and speeds up the death. I finally just bought a $12 tube of Arctic MX-4 and reflowed it the right way with a heat gun. Anyone else try the towel trick and get lucky for a while before it came back worse?
